I have had my retirement plan and personal assets managed by Whelan Financial since 2006. Previously, I was attempting to manage my investments by myself, but I believe that having this firm manage my assets was the best decision I’ve made. My financial planner in the firm is Vincent Whelan; however, on several occasions, I have also met with other certified financial planners including Portia White, Stephan Detweiler, and Taylor Whelan. For the last 15 years, I have elected to have quarterly in-person meetings with the financial planners and front office staff because everyone is pleasant, friendly, and personable. All advisors in the office are respectful, trustworthy, and highly skilled at what they do. The investment committee, which includes all of the financial planners, meet and decide the funds they want to include or exclude for their clients. The firm meticulously follows the rules and regulations of their clients’ retirement plans. All these years, I have never felt uncomfortable at any time about any recommendations or decisions they make. I feel as if they manage clients’ money as if it’s their own. I’ve been very happy with my return on investments based on my personal risk tolerance. I also appreciate the transparency and thorough explanations with any changes made to the investments.

Overall, I have been very impressed by the attention to details with every aspect of the money management these financial planners provide. My portfolio is fully diversified and my assets are managed with discipline. The focus also is not only on return on the investment based on the risk tolerance of the client, but also on managing the expenses of the clients. From time to time, at my request, they have also reviewed and made recommendations on the 401-K and HSA portfolio with my current employer free of charge. I have been so impressed by their vast knowledge and skill of asset management, along with their friendly, personable approach that I have recommended this firm to my family members and friends.

This was my experience with Whelan Financial, and is my opinion. Hopefully the information here is helpful for those of you trying to find a good adviser.

I made my expectations of a financial adviser very clear when signing up with WF. I expect clear & prompt communication when there are any changes or issues I should be aware of regarding my investments. I expected that if there were stock options I wanted to purchase they would assist me in that process; and I expected that if the market is going up, my money is going up. Whelan Financial failed at all three of these expectations.

First was communication. After emailing my adviser expressing concerns that my account was under performing, my adviser informed me that because MY expectations weren't being met they would no longer work with me. Keep in mind that up until that point we had never so much as had a harsh word for one another. This came completely out of the blue. My adviser's behavior was not only unprofessional and immature, but volatile. That level of volatility is probably the last characteristic anyone should ever want in a financial adviser.

The second expectation was that if there were options I wanted to purchase they would assist me. Rather than assist me, they broke my account in two and told me that I could manage my own purchases.

The third expectation was that if the market is going up my money should be going up. Not only did my investments not grow, but (as mentioned earlier) communicating that I had concerns resulted in WF breaking up with me.

If you're looking for an adviser that you can trust, that won't make volatile & hasty decisions, that will be dependable & professional and will to commit to you as much as you commit to them, consider this feedback and make an informed decision.
