We have waited over 5 months for our deposit refund! Every time we talk to them, they tell us we are still on their list! Now they tell us it cost them $140.00 to clean the worn out carpet in two small rooms! It was dirty when my Grandson moved in so I doubt if they actually had them cleaned now. They are obviously trying to wear us down so we will just give up. This is what they do. If you don’t believe me, read their reviews before you rent from them!

The worst experience of my life living under their properties. I was placed into their properties through Western Illinois University. I showed up and had two roommates. After their system crashed and nobody in their properties was charged rent and utilities. I received a charge in my account that showed up randomly after months. After discovering what happened. I found out that I was the only one charged in my house. They had no clue two other peopel had keys and were living in the house. These two roomates did not sign a lease. This was years in the making. They had not been to the house to fix it for years and it was disgusting as soon as I moved in there. But dont think youll get a deposit back either, even if they do not know how bad the condition of the house is. The people here are rude and do a good job taking care of their tenants. I recommend going elsewhere.

We have waited over 5 months for our deposit refund! Every time we talk to them, they tell us we’re still on the list. Now they have charged us $140.00 to supposedly clean the carpets in 2 small rooms. They were dirty when my Grandson moved in so I doubt very much if they actually had them cleaned. My Grandson’s girlfriend left that place cleaner than when they moved in. It was such an awful apartment, they didn’t bother trying to decorate it, so there are no nail holes in the walls or damage of any kind. This is what they do, give you the run around until you get tired and give up. Don’t believe me? Read their reviews before you rent from them!

I would give zero! My son moved out on May 14, 2018. Today, September 17th, I finally received part of my deposit. Never been late on rent! Illinois law states 45 days after moving out, they are to return deposit. Left the place immaculate. The letter that accompanied the check is backdated July 3, 2018. USPS stamped it September 10th as the date it mailed out of Macomb. They sent a check only after my husband hounded Scott T. Collins, the owner; because Heather and the staff would not entertain my complaint about my deposit for months! The family owns hundreds of rental property in and around Macomb. Be very careful.

Never rented from them myself, but we had a viewing for one of their properties. Heather was incredibly rude to us and barely answered any of our questions. She acted like she didn’t want my boyfriend and I there to look at the property. Talked to the current resident who told us to stay away as the property floods and the heat is expensive and inconsistent. We specifically asked heather if flooding or heating was an issue because you could tell it might be, and she told us according to the tenants everything was fine, which is obviously not true. Heather will not disclose anything wrong with the property you’re looking at even if she’s aware of the issues. Also talked to some friends that have rented from STC and they said they won’t answer the phone to fix things even their emergency phone for emergency fixes. There are other rental companies in Macomb that while problematic at least have better staff that will try to work with you. I’m really glad I found all of this out before signing a lease with them. Stay away from STC or risk a year of an awful living situation.

My daughter rented an apartment on Lafayette Street in Macomb Illinois. STC used a part of the security deposit for expenses. They have failed in returning the balance due to her (after expenses). She moved out in June of 2019. Illinois law requires the return of security deposits within 45 days. I filed a complaint with the City of Macomb. I have called them (STC) many time and asked the owner to return may calls. He has never returned my telephone calls. Extremely poor business practice. Be aware!!!

Renting with STC was truly an awful experience. We had several issues when we first moved in, but one of the main issues that we had was when we first turned our heat on, the furnace was broken (not a big deal), but when we called to get it fixed nobody would answer. We then tried to get ahold of the "emergency number" and nobody answered. We were just going to leave a message, but we couldn't because their voicemail box was full. My roommate and I had to go 3-4 days with no heat, our house fluctuated from 55-58 degrees. When they got back to us they brought over a small space heater and it took another week to get the heat fixed in our house. We never had anything fixed timely, nor was it fixed well. Our basement flooded anytime it rained, we had a plethora of mice, no pipe work was done right, and our yard was hardly ever mowed; all seem like small things, but each issue adds up. On top of that, we were only there for five months. I will never rent from STC again and suggest none of yo do either. Our former landlord Marty Bellz was phenomenal; going from him to STC was a real wake-up call.

They will not follow state law when it comes to security deposits. (My address had 5 or more units meaning the state laws did indeed apply.) So, they were supposed to have an itemized list, accompanied by a partial refund, sent to my new address within 30 days of moving out OR a full refund within 45 days. They even told me it would be about 45 days when I dropped off my keys and confirmed my new address upon moving out. Alright, cool, I can handle that.

Well, day 45 rolled around, so I decided to contact them to get an update. I received this response, "The refund has been processed, but we can't send out the check until the boss comes in and hands it to us." For the next several weeks, I heard this same canned response until I decided to send a demand letter.

The demand letter gets to their address via certified mail on day 73. A day passes, I get a text from one of the employees telling me the check was in the mail. Yay, I will finally get my money back after 2 1/2 months! Unfortunately, they had to have been lying. I still haven't received anything after about 10 business days. It took my piece of mail 2 business days to get to them. (Peoria, IL to Macomb, IL - Seriously, it isn't a long distance, look it up.)

All in all, I have given them almost 90 days to get my refund to me without going to small claims. I haven't received a dime despite leaving the apartment in great shape and paying rent every month on time.

(I want to also bring it to everyone's attention that they take out money for "carpet cleaning" in the range of $150 from security deposits no matter what the carpet's condition was upon entering and exiting the premise. They are most certainly pocketing this money along with entire deposits such as in my case.)

Go up
