I have been a mortgage customer twice at Home State Bank. Our mortgage banker Joe Starzynski has guided us through the process and it has gone well both times. I like working locally and Home State works for me. We went from initial application to closing in 23 days. I heartily recommend them!

Joe Starzynski helped guide us through the complicated process of buying a new home. He helped determine how much we could afford and then walked us step by step in the process of attaining our goal from paying down debt to shopping for homeowners policy to everything in between. He is the man to work with st Hone State Bank, a truly local business looking out for my best interest. Thanks Joe!

Online issues constant now. Can't update information like email, etc. Bank at the same bank as a family member and became a signer on their account so someone at the bank decided to change our address in our profile.

Technical difficulties error message keeps popping up and they claim it is due to snow. Well this has been going on for over a month, not just the past week and what did snow have to do with it?

I have worked IT and happen to know that the network systems will switch to backup generators so the entire system doesn't go down.

One night everything balance and the next day the balance amount changes without reflecting any new transactions. Keeps happening.

Really disappointed. Really fed up. Changing banks.

So, I was looking for a new bank closer to home. Wasn't looking for anything fancy, just an old-fashioned bank with truly free checking that still sends paper statements and doesn't require online banking. I noticed that this branch has a few locations, so I started my online research. Then I called and asked a few questions, and ultimately I went in to open an account. My overview is below. Will update after I get to know them better.

Appearance: cute and clean. What appeals to me is the historical significance. This was the old Post Office. See the pics I posted.

Wait time: Only one personal banker so I waited a half hour, and no one came over to apologize for the wait.

Knowledge/policies: Needs improvement. The teller told me over the phone that there would be a 4.95 per month cost for paper statements for the free checking account. She did correct herself after checking with a co-worker. The personal banker said they couldn't accept the checks I was depositing since they were over 6 months old. The federal and state checks both clearly stated to void after one year. The banker had to go get manager approval and sign off on these government checks. At the end I find out they charge enormous fees for everything.

I really like home state because of the customer service. But I just opened my account less than two months ago and have already run into too many issues. You can no longer deposit cash or checks at the atm, when they updated their online app no one told me I’d have to reset my password so I kept unsuccessfully trying to log-in until I had to call the bank, I was charged with some overdraft fees even though I specifically signed paperwork when opening my account to deny any overdraft transactions.... and if you have any issues when the bank isn’t open you have to wait til the next business day, versus going with a bigger chain.

UPDATE 2/10/20- I’ve stayed with Home State - they have improved their glitches and I haven’t had any issues.

I love banking at a hometown bank where they know my name and greet me as I walk in. Donna goes above and beyond and is always there to support or help solve any banking issues that arise.

This bank charges exhorbident fees to honor their own note. This practice is nothing short of theft, charging the customer for the privilege of using their tender in the form of a check, then charging a high fee when asked to make good. What is the service that has been provided? May I charge you money for fulfilling my promises?
