Misleading Invitations & Unethical Practices – Avoid Discover Credit Card!

I recently received an invitation from Discover to apply for their credit card, despite having an excellent credit score and a credit line exceeding $30,000. Given this, I assumed my approval was highly likely. However, to my surprise, my application was rejected. When I contacted customer service for an explanation, I was told that I was “too new” and lacked sufficient credit history. If that were truly the case, why did they send me an invitation in the first place?

To make matters worse, Discover was unwilling to reconsider their decision, and their hard credit inquiry negatively impacted my score. When I pointed this out, their customer service blatantly tried to deny that a hard check affects credit scores—a statement that is factually incorrect and highly misleading.

This entire experience was both frustrating and unethical. Not only did Discover waste my time and cause unnecessary stress on my day off, but they also left a needless inquiry on my credit report that will linger for two years. Their misleading marketing tactics and refusal to take responsibility for their actions make it clear that they do not value potential customers. I would strongly advise anyone considering a Discover credit card to think twice before trusting them.

It's really too bad there's no zero star review. I've had Discover since 2001, it was one of my first cards. It helped me build credit and learn how to use credit responsibly. So, when I evaluated my credit cards a couple years ago, I realized that Discover had the highest interest rate of any of my cards, so I stopped using it. I forgot about it until I was reviewing my credit report which said my accounts are all relatively new. When I looked it up, I realized that Discover had closed my account due to inactivity. When I called multiple times to beg them to reopen the account so it won't affect my credit rating like it is, they were rude and even just hung up on me. They offered to resend me the notice of account closure!! Like I need the notice NOW!?! WTH?! How stupid are their customer service supervisors that this is what they tell their agents to do?!?! Probably not stupid, just a55h07es.

They have the ability to reopen accounts, they just refuse. No matter that I had been a responsible customer for twenty plus years. No matter that it didn't cost them anything to keep my account open, nor much to reopen the account (a nominal fee would have even been worth it to me). They just closed it and refused to discuss the matter. NEVER again will I have a Discover card, the card you have trouble finding places to use, the card with the highest interest rate... NEVER again. RUDE customer NO service. HIGH interest rates. I'll do like one of the other commentors said, bring this up at every chance in every conversation I ever have going forward. I'll spread this view as far and as often as possible. DO NOT GET A DISCOVER CARD!!!!

Discover was the first card I ever had. Got it right out of college, 30 years ago. But I have a recurring charge that they cannot stop. I disputed the charge in Dec of 23 and also in December of 24. There is no way for me to contact the company. The company number is an endless loop of recorded messages. Discover told me they would block charges from the company, but then allowed them to continue to charge me. I disputed the charge two years in row and lost both times. Discover always sides with the merchant because that’s what’s easiest for them. And they may tell you that they can block a company from charging but that’s a lie. On top of that they were rude to me about it. I closed my account because Discover doesn’t protect their customers.

Applied for Discover Card October 2024. Verification process began after card activation. So many hurdles! Errors on Equifax report, disputed and corrected by me. IRS Form 4506-C sent digitally to IRS from Discover-eight times! Yesterday, IRS sent notification they couldn't verify me because address lines weren't filled out on form-- they were. Middle name on 4506-V spelled incorrectly by Discover; no big deal, but this is Month Three trying to get my card account released for use.
Bottom line: No company should penalize customers for zero attention to detail and/or errors. Currently, the IRS needs me to resend 4506-C because middle name misspelled (Discover). Can't use credit still! High marks in Customer Service means nothing if continued misses confuse the off-site verifications like Equifax and IRS. Recommendation: Go to another bank. UPDATE: Discover verified my application, sent new card, and apologized for the process. I reverse my recommendation and commend the bank for assisting. Thank you Discover for your diligence and professionalism. The reason I chose Discover presents at long last.

Opened a CC and an HYSA account with Discover. Went to sign in one day and they sent the security code to login to a phone number I hadn't had for 2+ years. Meanwhile their site wouldn't allow me to change the phone number and then a few minutes later would not allow me to login and I think the person thet mistakenly sent the security code to now has access to my savings account with $6,000+ and I can't get a single rep on the phone at 2am!!!! I know for a FACT that your lines are not that damn busy. I can't wait to talk my money and business elsewhere. The moment I can regain access, I'm gone for good! And I'll be sure to spread the word. Online banks are awful.

I have had an account since 2019 with nothing but great experiences. I applied to open another card, I can not express how frustrating, irritating, annoying the process to open a card has been. The employees are rude as hell, I am on my 5th attempt to get a notary to approve that I am who I am, because every time it’s declined discover has given a bill shot excuse

Zero Stars – Discover Will Not Stand Behind You

If you have a dispute over a product you purchased with your Discover card, beware. While you can file a dispute, they won’t tell you that you can only win if the merchant doesn’t respond. Discover seems more interested in protecting the merchant than the customer.

We had a dispute with a company that provided a defective product. Despite having proof that the company agreed to refund us— including a signed document from the owner—Discover refused it, claiming they couldn't consider it because it was a legal document, and "they're not lawyers." This was ridiculous since the document was meant as proof, not for legal judgment. It didn’t matter to Discover that the product was damaged or that the refund was agreed upon; they simply sided with the merchant.

Their dispute process exists, but it seems designed to shield businesses, not consumers. Discover is a predatory company, and with so many credit cards out there, consider this a warning. Steer clear.
