My husband and I utilized Kemper CPA Group to handle our 2020 federal and state income taxes. The CPA we worked with was not responsive and missed small details in our taxes. Our Illinois state income tax was mailed to the state without an accompanying W2. This resulted in us receiving a bill from the the state showing we did not pay any income tax and assessed a 2% penalty to the taxes we owed. We reached out to our CPA who instructed us how to fix the issue with a letter to the state. My husband requested that they fix the issue, since an accurate and complete filing should be the baseline expectation for anyone seeking tax preparation services. That day we dropped off the notice to our CPA with the expectation that it would be handled quickly. A week later the CPA calls to inform us that the letter has been completed and we just need to come in to pick up the letter and mail to the Department of Revenue. When my husband picked up the letter my first name was spelled incorrectly in multiple places. He informed the associate, so they went back to correct the letter. However, they only corrected the letter in one of the two locations. We didn't realize the letter still had mistakes until later that day when we were already home. Ultimately, I ended up writing and filing the correspondence on my own. This was the first year my husband and I had our taxes completely by a "professional" and I would have to say that by using them the process was significantly more stressful than if we had completed it ourselves. On top of that this oversight has caused us to question our confidence in the accuracy of the rest of our tax filings.
