Horrific and unprofessional. I used Terril for a brokerage account because my wife’s family had used him for years. After a few years of disappointing returns, I asked some critical questions about investment strategies. His first response was to “trust him or let him off the ride.” We met and he apologized and explained his strategy, which swayed me to stay with them for a while. After continued poor returns, I asked a few other firms for opinions. They all echoed the same sentiment: unless I told him I was risk averse, the makeup of my portfolio made no sense for someone my age. I repeatedly told him I was risk tolerant and wanted a more aggressive portfolio. The bottom line is his strategy is very conservative. He won’t lose big in down years. But he also won’t win big in up years. His entire strategy is based on it takes more percentage to gain back after a loss. They preach an individualized approach. But what they actually mean and give you is a “you’ll do it my way, pay me one percent of everything and explain away any concerns you have without actually putting one to power or giving you numbers.” When I decided to tell him we were parting ways he sent me an incredibly inflammatory, insulting and unprofessional email. Buyer beware. This man’s ego is only outpaced by the assets he is mismanaging. Don’t believe me? Just ask him. He will tell you his method of investing is the only way. Anyone else is a fool and will squander their money. I guess Warren Buffet doesn’t know anything about investing either. I will gladly take my money elsewhere.
