I am disabled and mentally unable to take 4 classes at the same time. I tried to obtain a bachlors here with the goal of taking 2 classes per semester. This office told me that my grants would not cover my classes and that I had to pay back part of the fees. I thought that Financial Aid would point me in a good direction. The staff advised me to take out a loan which would only increase my debt. Banks charge interest. I already knew that and refused to take out a loan. Then I read about pell intensity. I was taught by Democrats that education should be for everyone and not just the rich. It is because of this new rule that I decided to take no more classes at the university. This office is creul and will only look for more ways to get money even if it means flat out lying to the students. This office does not deserve the title financial aid office. Financial aid aid aids people fincially. Instead this office tried to increase my debt. This office was unable to help me out financially but instead told me of ways that they could get more money on my behalf making them much more a financial robbery office. Placing money above the students is one thing but after I dropped my classes due to the law this office furthered the creulty by sending me a snide e mail blaming me for not arriving at my classes on time which did not even happen. I was never late for a class in Spring of 25. I was always taught to support locals but that is tough to do when the locals aren't kind. The people working in this office don't know what they are doing and should quit instead of taking revenge on the people around them! Financial aid should aid the students financially and not the office employees financially.

P.S. I discribed this experience because google told me to.

I can't say enough about Renee Castaneda! If you have questions regarding financial aid, she is the person to ask for! With being the parent of a first time college student, I had many questions. Renee helped me thru all of them. She is great! Definitely deserves recognition for her outstanding work!

I would like to THANK RENEE CASTANEDA for helping my son to get him cleared to receive his Financial Aid. She keep on it and never gave up until it was done. This is the kind of people the Financial Aid Department needs to hire. Someone that goes above and beyond her duties to assure customer service is done. She TRULY Cares about the students and families.
THANK YOU again Ms. Castaneda for all you do. :):)

Come on SIU Financial Aid Office! This is not how you should treat the parent of an incoming prospective Freshman. Rude, short, unfriendly, and couldn’t wait to hang up. This is the first distaste I’ve gotten from SIU. Please understand that all of the detail is new to some of your customers. That’s why we call. I’m disappointed. 🙁

Horrible experience in every way! Staff was very unfriendly and above all extremely unhelpful in helping me work through financial needs to achieve my higher education goals. They advised me to drop out instead of offering solutions or a helping hand when a financial issue presented itself. They offered this advice when i was just one semester from graduation!

Update* I am glad to report I did not take their horrible and malicious advice to drop out and graduated with high honors (: no thanks at all to Siu financial aid office!

Asked for my private scholarship to be transfer since November because i transferred school, they never did it. The lady in charge of the job keep saying that she will do it today. I called like 7 times and its always "I forgot" or "I am busy". It is 4 months now and I still haven't received my scholarship money back. Then suddenly there is a big deal and missing a lot of thing because they just got started after multiple phone calls complains, the process still is not done yet. This school FAO honestly suck

This office is definitely part of the reason why enrollment is low at SIU! They are rude and have very few correct answers. In the time it took for them to process my paperwork, I managed to apply to another University, and complete the entire process including financial aid. Goodbye SIU other schools are happily your students.

Renee Castañeda is an absolute gem. She was helpful, understanding, and compassionate, and she DIDN'T HANG UP ON ME LIKE SOME PEOPLE MAY HAVE. This office is a nightmare to navigate, but if you are lucky enough to speak with the one helpful person in this establishment, you're in good hands.

I detest writing reviews for things, but her service was too good for me to let it go unrecognized or appreciated.

Thank you, Renee, for taking pride in your work to actually help students. The difference you make is more than you know.
